"We must defeat the coup, impunity and terror." Manuel Zelaya of Honduras legitimate president since January 2006, was waived June 28, 2009 by a coup. Since January 27, 2010, he is with his wife and her younger sister in the Dominican Republic. Interview by Manola Romalo, published exclusively by Junge Welt (Germany) and Rebellion (Spain).
This June 28 the Honduran people out across the country protesting against the coup a year ago by a clique of oligarchs, sponsored by Washington. Under the hospice of a puppet government set up in July 2009 - followed by the manipulated presidential elections of January 2010 - paramilitaries have murdered so far dozens of members of the Resistance, trade unionists, teachers, journalists. Protecting its economic interests, the EU sees the difference.
Manola Romalo: Mr. President, it is one year today that a clique of contractors sent soldiers to kidnap you in your home under fire bullets. What does this act for the future of Honduras?
Manuel Zelaya: Right now, they have more problems than before: they have raised awareness, not only in the Honduran people but also to the peoples of Latin America, the threat of economic ambition democracies. With this attack, they were able to accelerate the transformation process through which data are new opposition forces.
The influence of large Multinational extends to foreign policy of the United States, proof that the Obama administration - as well as that of his predecessor - has fallen into the terrible mistake of supporting state terrorism. They started to make coups, method already practiced in the past by extreme right bent on sowing the barbarity worldwide.
Manola Romalo: Although the coup, sponsored by Washington, tried to make up democracy in the presidential elections of November 2009 much of the international community has not recognized the legitimacy of government. What changes does the democratic people of Honduras?
Manuel Zelaya: I presented a reconciliation plan by 6 points going through the respect of human rights and end impunity. This is the correct way to cancel the coup and return to the rule of law.
With their uncompromising stance and leave unpunished the extremist coup in Honduras, the United States and its allies do not support this plan Creole and do not help the reconciliation of the Honduran people. Unlike
that we hoped, with his statements, the State Department condemned the crime he ignores previously called "political crisis" that obscures the facts: the immunity and privileges of the coup.
Manola Romalo: The German Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs on its website that "after the coup d` state ', the German government will not resume new aid projects for Honduras by also short for "government consultancies. What is the country's economic situation?
Zelaya: figures speak louder than words. In three years we achieved the best indicators of growth in the history of Honduras: 6,5 and 6, 7%. For the first time in thirty years, poverty had been reduced to over 10%.
By cons, since the coup, the country entered an economic recession, the number of poor has increased, investment by the State and those individuals have been reduced significantly. The damage caused by the coup in the process of economic development will take at least ten years before being repaired.
Manola Romalo: This June 28, there will be large demonstrations across the country, people will debate the main articles of the Declaration legitimate to rebuild democracy, constitutional order and the State of law.
Manuel Zelaya: organization, awareness and mobilization are needed to strengthen the National Front for Popular Resistance (FNRP) which is the social and political force of resistance against the coup. We have the responsibility for rebuilding, the people must take matters underway to transform the country.
Manola Romalo: Mr. President, in the political context of Honduras, the people calling you back vigorously. What are your plans?
Manuel Zelaya: The future is not far away. However I make plans for this: I want to succeed in defeating the space of impunity with which the coup leaders say cover up the crimes against democracy and against humanity.
My return will be immediate, there is no excuse nor rationale which would explain the absolute absence of guarantees o my return. It is not possible that someone claims to see the victims brought to justice their perpetrators.
My return is linked to the resumption of the rule of law in Honduras. The president Porfirio Lobo own claims to be threatened, adding that while it guarantees my safety.
Obviously, they use the Hondurans as guinea pigs, the coup leaders make this country a laboratory of violence. They resort to military castes to repress the people and create chaos in order to maintain control over society. They do not matter what the consequences of regional integration process and confrontation, doubly proven with multilateral agencies.
The evidence is before our eyes: they created a new regime of terror and persecution. And the U.S. has lost much of their prestige in Latin America.
